World Junior Judo Championships in Paris
Yannick Gutsche wins bronze medal for TSV Bayer
Yannick Gutsche ended a 17-year wait for a medal for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen judokas by winning the bronze medal at the U20 World Championships in Paris. The U20 European Championship runner-up won the fight for third place in the 81kg weight limit by beating South Korean Hui-Jung Lee. Ralf Koser, now deputy head of the Bayer judo department, was the last Bayer athlete to win a medal at the U20 World Championships when he won the title in Buenos Aires in 1992.
Gutsches started off in Paris by beating Argentinean Jose Effron. He went on to surprise Aigars Milenbergs from Latvia with a yuko five seconds from the end. Gutsches was defeated by Russian Magomed Magomedow in only 34 seconds but the 18-year-old bounced back by defeating Alexandre Kukoly and earning a place in the fight for third place which he went on to win.
